Breath as the Steering Wheel
Use the breath as the fastest available lever on your nervous system, so the analytical brain stays in the chair when the tape gets loud.
Why Breath Comes First
Breath is the only autonomic function you can run on manual. That makes it the cheapest, fastest input to your nervous system during a live session. Slow the exhale and you slow the heart. Slow the heart and the limbic alarm quiets down. The analytical brain comes back online.
The mechanism is straightforward. The vagus nerve regulates heart rate and parasympathetic tone. A longer exhale than inhale stimulates it. That is why the 4-7-8 pattern and box breathing (4-4-4-4) both work, and why short, shallow chest breathing in front of a screen keeps you stuck in low-grade fight-or-flight without you noticing.
James's body-check list puts "Monitor Breath" alongside "Check Heart Rate" for the same reason. They are the two cheapest reads on the state you are trading from. If your breath is in the upper chest at the bell, that is information about the trader before it is information about the market.

Two Patterns Worth Owning
You do not need a library of techniques. You need two patterns you can run without thinking.
Box breath (4-4-4-4). Inhale four, hold four, exhale four, hold four. Useful pre-session and between trades. It keeps you alert without keyed up.
Extended exhale (4-7-8 or 4-8). Inhale four, exhale longer. Useful after a stop, after a missed setup, or any time you notice the breath has climbed into the upper chest. The long exhale is the parasympathetic switch.
One minute of either, done honestly, will reset the state most of the time. Skip the ritual and the next click is taken by a body that is still in the prior trade.
